Industry in Halifax, Nova Scota

The largest sector for employment in the HRM (Halifax Regional Municipality) is the varying levels of government. With the single largest employer being the Department of Defence. With the largest man-wise military base in Canada, the largest naval dockyards on the eastern seaboard North of Virginia, and the naval base for the Atlantic Maritime Fleet. As you can see the Department of Defence has a large presence in the area. Other large areas of employment for the government are the education system, health care system, police services, and municipality services such as garbage collectors or firemen.

The fact that Halifax also has many other major industries in the area is also beneficial. Halifax has a major port and much of the economy is affiliated with the port or the port's associates. It is a major hub for the transportation of goods all over the continent with railways leading to inland Canada and much of the Northern United states. The Municipality of Halifax has resource industries too that include Agriculture, fishing, mining, forestry and natural gas extraction, clay, shale, gold, limestone, and gypsum extraction.

The food industry is strong as well since there is high level of tourism in the area. Many catering companies do very well and in fact handle large contracts for wedding catering Toronto businesses for out of province wedding ceremonies.
